Change

Updated: Jan 27

Socrates wrote that “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” Why do we insist on fighting anyway?

The only guarantee in life is that everything changes. Heraclitus wrote "There is nothing permanent except change." Yet the Universe is not under our control (even if we sometimes think it is – but that’s just our ego talking).

Frida Kahlo wrote "Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.” We can't change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust the sails of life to always reach our destination. The key is to adjust the sails, let go of the outcome, reassess, and readjust again if necessary. Keep repeating that, combined with acceptance, and you will have a successful, abundant, and peaceful life, I guarantee you. The alternative is to fight the Universe: How’s that going for you?

Herman Hesse, the author of ‘Siddhartha’, which is in my 'Suggested Reading List', wrote “Some of us think holding on makes us strong but sometimes it is letting go.”

Maya Angelou wrote "If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” But for this, we need to apply forgiveness: Steve Maraboli wrote "The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realise that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.” Isn't it time that you moved on? The past is gone and it's history. It's just a story...

Are you ready to change?

Sir Winston Churchill wrote “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

Albert Einstein said no less than “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” Charles Darwin wrote in 'On The Origin of Species' “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” But before any significant change occurs, we are motivated by disarray. This is the gift of desperation. Deepak Chopra wrote “All great changes are preceded by chaos.” William S. Burroughs wrote similarly that "Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape.”

Change starts with us

Viktor E. Frankl wrote in 'Man's Search For Meaning', which is in my 'Suggested Reading List', that “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Barack Obama agreed, saying that ”Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” Personal transformation is like being a midwife to the birth of the new you. Your new way of BEing is the key to your abundance.

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote “The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind.” George Bernard Shaw wrote “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Are you ready to change your mind?

It is in your power to change your Self. Abraham Maslow (who devised his ‘Hierarchy of Needs’) said that “In any given moment we have two options: To step forward into growth or step back into safety.”

Carl Rogers, the psychologist and supercoach, wrote "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change."

Frank Herbert, the author of ‘Dune’ wrote “Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.” Change, then, is similar to awakening and Enlightenment. Indeed, Enlightenment means 'waking up.'

Roy T. Bennett wrote that "It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.”

Henry David Thoreau wrote "Things do not change; we change."

So, you want to change the world?

Jalal al-Din Rumi wrote “Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing my Self.”

Do you want to construct your own demise? Harold Wilson wrote “He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery.”

Margaret Mead wrote that “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Mother Teresa echoed “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Joseph Campbell, the author of ‘The Hero’s Journey’ wrote “We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

Eckhart Tolle, the author of 'The Power of Now' and 'A New Earth', which are both in my 'Suggested Reading list', wrote that "Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realise that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.”

Aldous Huxley wrote "I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself.”

Mahatma Gandhi wrote "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Leo Tolstoy wrote "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."

Change the way that you look at things

By changing our perception, from one looking at the world through the lens of fear to one through the lens of love, we actually change it. Have you noticed how a simple thought can change everything from appearing dark and gloomy to bright and energising? Dr Wayne Dyer wrote that "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

Carl Jung wrote "We cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses."

Change and creativity

Miles Davis, the musician, wrote “It’s not about standing still and becoming safe. If anybody wants to keep creating they have to be about change.”

Andy Warhol, the artist, wrote "They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself."

Conclusion

The 12 step recovery prayer states that "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Indeed, the 'Big Book' is full of references to change.

Steve Jobs wrote that “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” It's ok to be a little crazy - the best people are!

Timothy Leary wrote "You’re only as young as the last time you changed your mind.” How's that going for you? Are you headed for a rebirth or the cemetery?

Alan Watts wrote "The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

Lao Tzu wrote "If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading."

George Bernard Shaw wrote that “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Again, are you ready to change your mind?

Namaste.

Sending you love, light, and blessings brothers.

Olly
