Fear is the Mind-Killer

Updated: Jan 28

All of us are afraid. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is our pain. It limits us from achieving our full possibility as human beings. It keeps us locked in darkness, wallowing in despair. Fear spins yarns that we can’t help but believe. But, there is a way out of our fear...

Frank Herbert wrote "Fear is the mind-killer"

We pass fear on to our children, to our friends, and to everyone that we meet. Fear is the worst four letter word. It makes us reach for a panacea that promises much but delivers little, if anything making fear worse. It’s like taking a laxative to treat a headache. We seek distraction and numbing, which just adds to the chaos to our lives. We become disassociated or angry. Fear is a very real inheritance from our fearful parents. But fear is not based on ultimate reality. Fear cannot live in the same house as Faith. Fear knocks on our door, and when Faith answers we see that no-one is there. Fear cannot survive the light of Truth being shone on it.

Why is fear so all pervasive and ubiquitous? It’s because fear is the language of trauma and of the ego. We need to change from an egocentric world view to a soul-centric world view. We need to develop our conscious contact with the sacred. This is done through prayer and meditation as part of our daily spiritual practice.

Fear cannot survive action. Action shows us that there is nothing to be afraid of, like looking under the bed to see that there is no monster as children. Like opening the door to see that there is nothing behind it. Like bungee jumping and realising that it was thrilling and that we are safe. We take intuitive action to dispel fear. We take the Hero’s Journey. It is in the darkest cave that we find our greatest reward - a life where fear no longer rules our lives.

In healing and recovery, we are given tools to overcome our fear on a daily basis. When we are alone, we are behind enemy lines, and fear thrives, like gas filling sodden trenches. Connection takes us out of ego. Being taken out of ego takes us out of fear. Expressing ourselves vulnerably to others creates connection, a real antidote to fear. This is the crying after the initial anger. The anger is based on illusion. Crying touches the Truth. Crying represents vulnerability and openness, as is the best way to deal with many of our overwhelming emotions.

We are afraid because we try to control everything so that the future won’t hurt us. No-one can control everything. The solution is to surrender to a Higher Power and to trust that all is well, and that all will be well. This is the journey from pain to peace.
