Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway

Updated: Jan 29

Susan Jeffers wrote one of the landmark books on fear: ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway.' The overriding message of the book is that “You can handle it!” And you can! As Michael Neill wrote "We are not afraid of what we think we are afraid of... We are afraid of what we think."

Feel the fear and do it anyway

At the first ACA UK national meeting last weekend, attended by 400 beautiful people, one wonderful woman had stage 4 breast cancer and an incredibly difficult personal life, and yet she was full of joy and peace. She did not show any fear. She radiated serenity. But how could she be like this?

I have already written about fear, but what is the magic bullet; the solution?

The way through fear is action. FEAR is an acronym for ‘Face Everything And Rise’. Carl Jung wrote that “Neurosis is always a substitute for legitimate suffering.” You see, we go to any lengths to avoid pain, but the paradox is that in doing so we cultivate anxiety. The key is to face your fear head on, take intuitively inspired action and let go of all attachments to the outcome. Very few things that we worry about actually happen, and if they do, very few of these can’t be dealt with. So, take action and surrender the result to the Universe: It has your back.

Instead, we feel fear twice - the fear about the fear, and then the fear, which is never as bad as you thought it would be. For example, those who are afraid of flying are terrified for some time before they get on the plane, but often find themselves laughing when the aeroplane takes off. Michel de Montaigne wrote “He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears.” Read that again.

If we can realise that fear, like all emotions, is just a comment on the quality of our thinking. Fear is simply incorrect thought.

Jack Canfield wrote that "Everything you want is on the other side of fear." You are a limitless BEing held back only by your false beliefs: In other words, your fears. What if the opposite of all your fears were true? Who could stop you then?

Fear and excitement feel the same and manifest in the same ways physiologically. So, why not feel excited instead of afraid?

I love the aphorism “Fear and Faith don’t live in the same house.” And the very short yet powerful story: “Fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. There was no-one there.”

Just let life unfold as it is. Fears are projecting from not living in present moment. They come from a life lived in the future. There is nothing to fear in the now.

Dealing with Narcissistic, psychopathic, toxic people who practice character assassination doesn’t help your emotional state, constantly nipping at your heels. Sadly there are many people around like this, and they huddle together, especially on social media and the internet, like shivering penguins in a snowstorm, but I guarantee you that they live life in fear. One or both of your parents may be like this. But we can see them for what they are. We are better than that. The only way to deal with them is to cut them off. Just don’t react. Don't stand up from the seat of your soul. When you live in an environment when you are on different pages, toxic people try to attack rather than expand, but they can't touch you. They are attacking their own self. They try to draw you down to their level. It’s the opposite of a spiritual approach where we see the highest in everyone. People are especially toxic when they fail to get your attention as most likely they crave imitation love.

See people for who they are and expect the same back from them: We are all innocent children of God. See the highest in everyone. For those who insist on being toxic - cut them off, immediately. If you can’t, then it’s time to turn the page. You don’t need to be a masochist, nor a sadist for that matter. Surround your Self with people who are on same page as you. Spend time with people who celebrate life and unconditional love, not imitation love in all its forms. This is true abundance. When you spend time with these guides and Enlightened Witnesses you become versions of your Self that you are not capable of BEing by your self; at least not without infinite amounts of time and vast numbers of mistakes. Narcissists can’t do this so they seek to bring others down to their level. You can become an authority figure and be vulnerable: In fact it's the only way. You become more than who you think you are (your ego) - actually becoming the real you.

Light means understanding. Enlightenment means understanding. Only love is real. Nothing else exists. Illusions dissolve in the presence of love. Everything about us can change. Enlightenment and miracles go naturally together. As the mind that is free from fear is a vessel of love. And this mind works miracles.

Seneca, the Stoic philosopher wrote "No man is more unhappy than he who never faces adversity. For he is not permitted to prove himself."

Don’t be afraid of anyone or anything. Realise that fear is just your thinking. If it feels like you are in a tailspin over something, allow the autopilot to kick in: The Universe will right the plane. And remember, as it says in the poem ‘Invictus’ by William Ernest Henley, “I am the captain of my soul.” Yes, you are...

These are the emotions that I have covered for you in my series on emotions (click on the link to be taken to them):

Namaste.

Sending you love, light, and blessings brothers.
