Humility

Updated: Feb 23

Humility is power. Lao Tzu wrote that "All streams flow to the ocean because it is lower than they are. Humility gives it its power." Spencer W. Kimball said that "Humility is royalty without a crown."Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that “A great man is always willing to be little.” J. M Barrie said that “Life is a long lesson in humility.”

Humility is not another name for weakness. Humility means to 'right-size' ourselves; it is simply the virtue of being our true Selves. Michel de Montaigne wrote that “On the highest throne in the world, we still sit only on our own bottom.”

Humility and intellect can be compatible, provided we place humility first. When we begin to do that, we receive the gift of Faith: A Faith that works. This Faith is for you too.

C. S. Lewis wrote that "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less."

C. S. Lewis wrote that “As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.”

As you grow spiritually, where humility used to mean to us a forced feeding on humble pie, it now begins to mean the nourishing ingredient that can give us serenity and peace. Tryon Edwards wrote that "True humility is not an abject, grovelling, self-despising spirit; it is but a right estimate of ourselves as God sees us."

Confucius wrote that "Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues." James E. Faust wrote that "A grateful heart is a beginning of greatness. It is an expression of humility. It is a foundation for the development of such virtues as prayer, Faith, courage, contentment, happiness, love, and well-being."

Humility and openness are the key to success. Real humility is a powerful soul force, which when unleashed, can bring a person into a place of purpose, meaning, vision, Real Personal Power, and abundance. Radhanath Swami said that "To be a leader means to have humility, to have respect and to serve the people that we are leading. And that type of character, that type of integrity not only brings real fulfilment to our own hearts, but also has a great effect on the lives of all the people around us." Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success. Swami Sivananda said that "Humility is not cowardice. Meekness is not weakness. Humility and meekness are indeed spiritual powers." Harold Warner said that "Humility is the gateway into the Grace and the favour of God." Rabindranath Tagore said that "We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility." Your Higher Power is humble.

Too much of our lives are spent dwelling upon the perceived faults of others. This is the most subtle and perverse form of self-satisfaction, which permits us to remain unaware of our own defects. Too often we hear "If it weren't for him (or her) how happy I'd be!" Our very first problem is to accept our present circumstances as they are, ourselves as we are, and the people about us as they are. This is to adopt a realistic humility without which no genuine advance can even begin. Again and again, we shall need to return to that unflattering point of departure. This is an exercise in acceptance that we can profitably practice every day of our lives.

Thomas Merton wrote that "Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real." Martin Luther wrote that “True humility does not know that it is humble. If it did, it would be proud from the contemplation of so fine a virtue.” St. Vincent de Paul wrote that “Humility is nothing but truth, and pride is nothing but lying.”

Andrew Murray wrote that “Humility is perfect quietness of heart. It is to expect nothing, to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me. It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised. It is to have a blessed home in the Lord, where I can go in and shut the door, and kneel to my Father in secret, and am at peace as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and above is trouble... Pride must die in you, or nothing of Heaven can live in you... Here is the path to the higher life: Down, lower down! Just as water always seeks and fills the lowest place, so the moment God finds men abased and empty, His glory and power flow in to exalt and to bless.”

Ernest Hemingway wrote that "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self." Robert Louis Stevenson wrote that “There are two things that men should never weary of, goodness and humility; we get none too much of them in this rough world among cold, proud people.”

Saint Augustine wrote that "It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels."With pride, there are many curses. With humility, there come many blessings. This is how we make a humble God out of you. Now you rise.

Namaste.

Sending you love, light, and blessings brothers.

Olly
